Pahalgam Attack 2025: A Sad Day in Kashmir

On April 22, 2025, a terrible attack happened in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In the beautiful Baisaran meadow, terrorists killed 26 people, including 25 tourists and a local pony rider named Syed Adil Hussain Shah. This was one of the worst attacks in Kashmir in years. It’s made people sad, angry, and worried about peace. Here’s what happened, who was affected, and what’s happening now.

What Happened That Day?

Baisaran is lovely with green fields and mountains, perfect for picnics and zipline rides. That day, over 1,200 tourists were there, enjoying the sunny weather. Around 3 p.m., four terrorists with guns started shooting. They came from the forests nearby and attacked suddenly. People ran and hid, but 26 didn’t make it. Among them was Vinay Narwal, a Navy officer on his honeymoon, and Debashish Bhattacharjee, a teacher from Assam. Naksh Kalthia from Surat lost his dad, Shailesh, and still feels the pain.

Some survivors said the terrorists asked people to say Islamic prayers to find out who wasn’t Muslim. A tourist named Rishi Bhatt heard someone shout “Allahu Akbar” before the shooting. Investigators are checking if this is true. A video from a zipline ride caught gunshot sounds, and it’s helping the police figure things out.

Heroes in a Dark Moment

Even in this scary time, some people were brave. Syed Adil Hussain Shah, the pony rider, fought a terrorist to save others but lost his life. People in Kashmir call him a hero. A Lieutenant Curnal’s wife on vacation, helped police by sharing what he saw. Locals like Gulzar Ahmad used ponies to take injured people to hospitals. “We had to help,” Gulzar said, showing how much Kashmiris care about visitors.

The attack hurt many families. Vinay’s wife, Himanshi, said goodbye to him in Delhi, crying as his coffin was covered with India’s flag. Families in Kolkata and Dombivli want a memorial for their loved ones. Everyone is hoping for justice.

Police and Investigations

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is leading the case. They say four terrorists—three from Pakistan and one local named Adil Thokar—did this. A group called The Resistance Front, linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, said they were behind it but later changed their story. The NIA is using a 3D map of Baisaran to study the attack, like they did for another case in 2019. They found gun shells and two stolen phones that might have clues.

Over 2,500 people, like shopkeepers and pony riders, are being questioned. The NIA thinks some locals might have helped the terrorists. They’re also looking at a video of a zipline worker and some secret phone apps. To stop more attacks, police have shut down 48 tourist spots in Kashmir and added more security checks.

India and Pakistan: Big Problems

India says Pakistan helped the terrorists, pointing to clues found in Pakistan’s cities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is letting the army decide how to respond. India has closed its border with Pakistan, stopped sharing river water, and banned Pakistani planes from flying over. Pakistan says it didn’t do anything wrong and has closed its airspace to India too. Both countries are upset, and it’s causing big tension.

World leaders, like U.S. President Donald Trump and France’s Emmanuel Macron, said the attack was wrong and support India. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told the United Nations about the terrorism problem. Pakistan wants other countries to help investigate, but India doesn’t trust them.

How Kashmir Is Coping

This attack hurt Kashmir’s tourism, which many people depend on. With so many places closed, tourists are leaving, and locals are losing money. People in Srinagar held candlelight vigils, and there was a big shutdown in Amritsar. Kashmir’s leaders, like Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, say everyone needs to work together to stop terrorism without blaming innocent locals.

Some people are worried about fights between communities because the terrorists targeted Hindus. There have been protests, and some news reports made things worse. But groups like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board are showing support for the victims, which helps bring people together.
