CAA: CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT
The report suggests that the CAA rules are expected to be notified before the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls.
According to reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is anticipated to issue the rules for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the next few weeks. These regulations are expected to be enforced before the activation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), usually initiated upon the announcement of election dates.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) modifies the Citizenship Act of 1955, offering a route to Indian citizenship for Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis who migrated from neighboring Muslim-majority countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014.
The implementation of the CAA triggered significant controversy and widespread protests throughout India. Critics argue that it discriminates against Muslims and undermines the secular principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Conversely, the government defends the law as a humanitarian measure aimed at safeguarding persecuted religious minorities from neighboring countries.
Earlier this month, Union home minister Amit Shah said that the CAA rules would be notified and implemented before the Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking at the ET-Now Global Business Summit (GBS) in Delhi, Shah said, “The CAA is an act of the country. It will be notified before the polls (upcoming Lok Sabha elections). There should be no confusion about it”.
Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the rules about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would be notified and enforced before the Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing the ET-Now Global Business Summit (GBS) in Delhi, Shah affirmed, “The CAA is a law of the land. It will be notified before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. There should be no ambiguity about it.”
He further added, “It (the law) was a commitment made by the Congress government. When the country was partitioned, and minorities faced persecution in those countries, Congress assured the refugees of their welcome in India and promised them Indian citizenship. However, they reneged on their promise.”
